Trump and Russia: An Update
If you recall, around a month ago I pledged to not write about Donald Trump in my blog with my reasoning being that the media already has a massive spotlight focused on the man and it would be unoriginal and pointless to add to that spotlight. My one exception to this rule of mine was that if something major happened in relation to President Trump, I would not hesitate to write about it.
Well, something major just happened in relation to President Trump. As I write this, about an hour ago CNN began reporting that according to US officials there was information that suggests that Trump associates coordinated with the Russians to release information to disrupt the election. The information in question was evidently used to damage the Clinton campaign and bolster Donald Trump during the election. This was done through a combination of fake news pieces designed to sway the average voter and the releasing of emails from Clinton. And to ensure the readers of this blog that my information is credible, this report came from the FBI, not some fake or biased news organization.
So far, the FBI cannot yet prove the ties between Russia and Trump, but the pieces are starting to come together. On Monday, we learned from FBI Director James Comey that there was an investigation underway in relation to a possible collusion with the Russian government to influence the election. Previous investigations targeted Michael Flynn (former National Security Adviser), Paul Manafort (former Trump campaign manager), Roger Stone (former political adviser to Donald Trump), and Carter Page (former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign). However, we do not know whether the information released today was related to these four people.
Comey did not specify who or what the focus of the current investigation is on. However, in the coming days I think we will learn more about the investigation and we will get to see our presidents response to these newly released reports. I have no doubt that these responses will come in the form of a tweet with multiple exclamation points and sentence fragments. But beyond that there are multiple courses that our country could take in the coming days. And what I am most unsure about is whether our political system could handle the impeachment process right now if worst came to worst.
Something is not right in this situation. Nobody in their right mind can disagree with that. Who knows? Maybe Trump is innocent after all. But the bread crumbs certainly lead in his direction, and that does not bode well for him. I think that regardless of political affiliation, we can all agree that the current political situation in our country can only be described as one word: Sad!
