The Inhumanity and Inefficiency of Separating Families at the Border

Image
One of the bigger stories that came about this week pertained to Roseanne Barr whose hit show Roseanne was  cancelled by ABC on Tuesday following a racist tweet she made. Now I am not going to dive into the tweet itself and my opinion on Barr because it is not a unique opinion and everybody who is anybody has already made a statement about it. However, (like I always do) I am going to analyze the response. Some conservatives and Trump supporters cried foul when they heard the show was cancelled. Its the liberal media trying to silence conservative opinions! they say.      Unless the liberal media force fed Roseanne the Ambien which evidently caused this tweet and infused it with a racism trigger, then she brought about her own demise. In rare form, Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren sounded pretty reasonable when addressing the conservatives racing to defend Roseanne. She tweeted , I dont know why fellow conservatives are playing mental gymnastics trying t...

The Destruction of Archie Parnell's Congressional Campaign

Image
Democratic Congressional Candidate Archie Parnell It looks like this blog is going to start with, yet again (you guessed it), another round of elections. This time they were held in Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas. The results that I found most interesting came from Kentucky and Georgia. A lot of media attention has gone to the gubernatorial race in Georgia since incumbent Republican Governor Nathan Deal has  reached his terms limit. Since there has been a surge in Democratic voters specifically in Georgia and a surge in Democratic enthusiasm nationwide, there are many eyes watching this previously secure Republican seat. Stacey Abrams  defeated Stacey Evans in the Democratic primary on Tuesday (every mom in this race had it going on) meaning that for the first time in Georgias history, a black woman won the nomination of a major party. If she wins in November, she will be the first black female governor in US history.        ...

Debate Season in South Carolina

Image
Image from the Republican Gubernatorial Debate at the College of Charleston There was another round of primaries on Tuesday night in Idaho, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska. I thought about making that the main subject of this weeks blog, but there is not much to discuss in regards to the topic. The most interesting news  came from Pennsylvania where there is a lot of Democratic enthusiasm. For the first time in the states history, a woman will be in their Congressional delegation. This is because the only candidates in the general election for Pennsylvanias 5 th District are women, Republican Pearl Kim and Democrat Mary Scanlon. Also, over 100,000  more Democrats turned out to vote than Republicans which is an early indicator of what the turnout will be in November. If the same gap between Democratic and Republican voter turnout holds, there could very well be a blue wave in Pennsylvania, a state where Donald Trump won in 2016 by a very  small margin (less than 50,000 v...

Analyzing Elections: West Virginia Edition

Image
Former Republican Senatorial Candidate Don Blankenship I am probably not the first person that has recommended that you watch the music video for Childish Gambinos song This is America, but I could not help giving it a mention on this weeks blog because it is a work of art. I am not original in making that observation but it does not make it any less true. It is a terrifying and sobering societal commentary packed with symbolism and makes a lasting impression through its shock factor. There is a plethora of music and art about the divide in our country these days and while a lot of that music is good and memorable, the way in which Gambino went about the topic was unique. It was intense and sinister unlike other songs in the subgenre that try to bring us together and that is why I have watched it multiple times and devoted an entire paragraph to it. I guess my point is that you should watch the video for it which can be found here .  Childish Gambino in "This is America" ...

The Dismemberment Abortion Ban Debate

One of the things that has happened over the past week that I have not really talked about is the Kanye West/ Donald Trump earthquake that has  turned Twitter upside-down. One thing I often do when analyzing an anomaly like this in our political environment is look at the reaction from both sides and find hypocrisy and double standards within their responses. I do not look to a single person as a mouthpiece for an entire ideology, but you can get a gist of what a lot of people are thinking on one side by looking at news articles or in this case especially, the thousands of tweets pertaining to the subject.     Those to the left of the aisle mostly disavowed West and cited his mental breakdowns and eccentricity as reasons that he is out of his mind and therefore, lacking credibility. This intolerance was noted by a lot of conservative commentators who chastised liberals for being intolerant even though they claim to be proponents of tolerance.    ...
