We Need the Media Now More Than Ever

In an interview with the New York Times, Steven Bannon, Chief Strategist to President Trump, patronizingly said that the media should, keep its mouth shut for a while. He also added, along with his constituent Donald Trump, that the media is, the opposition party.             These statements are terrifying.             The media is what holds the government accountable by informing the American people about what is happening in the government. Without the free media there is no stopping the government from lying to the American people without being called out for it. Without the free media the government can tell the people whatever they want, and we the people would have no way to know if what they are saying is true or false. Without the free media we can become brainwashed into believing that all is well, when really all is not well. Without the free media euphemisms li...

The Democratic Party Must Change

Im tired of talking about the election. But in order for the future to be better than the present it is something that we must do. I consider myself a democrat (sort-of). So November 10 th was not a great day for me; neither was it for many Americans. One of the biggest shocks of that election night was that Wisconsin, a reliably blue state, went red for Donald Trump. This was a major loss for Hillary Clinton and signaled to the rest of the Democratic Party that something was seriously wrong.             Wisconsin is a major blue-collar state and the fact that the Democratic Party (which has been a major friend to the blue collar community in the past) lost there should send a message to the party leaders that somewhere along the way a wrong turn was made. That wrong turn was abandoning the working class and becoming more elitist and less inclusive. The party became too confident and had forgotten about their base and instead cate...

Guns and School

Republican Senator Kevin Bryant from Anderson County recently proposed a law to the State Senate that would arm teachers across the state in order to protect students and prevent school shootings. While I think this bill, nicknamed the Jacob Hall Law in honor of the elementary school student who died in a school shooting last year has good intentions, I do not agree with it. The liability it would create if an accident were to happen, the tension it would generate, and the added stress to teachers everyday jobs make this proposal unpractical and flawed.             As a student, I oppose this proposal because of the liability it would create. I do not think adding more guns to the situation is a good idea, especially when the guns are being added to a relatively young and unstable environment: school. A few seconds of carelessness by a teacher or a moment of chaos created by a student could transform a regular school day into a ...
